Home Dental Care
Your pet's dental health is an important part of their overall health. Keeping their teeth clean can help to keep them healthy and to live a nice, long, fulfilling life. At home dental care is an important part of your pet's dental heath. There are many different products to help with caring for your pet's teeth, all of which can help keep your pet happy and healthy.
The gold standard for home dental care is brushing your pet's teeth. Your pet's teeth are very similar to your own teeth, and need to be brushed to keep the bacteria levels down. Imagine if we didn't brush our teeth, what our mouths would look and smell like. Your pet can't brush his own teeth, so he needs your help. Using a pet toothbrush, with pet toothpaste is important. The toothpaste is flavored, so your pet can enjoy the brushing experience. The bristles on the toothbrush are softer than on our brushes because your pet's enamel is much thinner than ours. Gradually introducing the toothpaste and brush are the best way to convince a pet who is not sure about the whole brushing experience to enjoy the time spent with you and that stick you keep putting into his mouth. Daily brushing may not eliminate the need for a professional cleaning, but it can certainly extend the time between visits to his dentist.
In addition to brushing, there are many other useful products to help keep your pet's teeth healthy. Water additives and oral rinses act in much the same way as Listerine, killing the bacteria without the brushing action. Oral gels help to coat the surface of the tooth, and in particular where the tooth meets the gum, where bacteria like to accumulate. Dental treats, like Greenies and Hill's T/D, use the chewing action of your pet to scrape the bacteria off their teeth. While these other options are helpful, they do not do as good of a job as brushing and should be used if brushing is not an option or in addition to brushing.
Keeping your pet's teeth happy and healthy keeps your pet happy and healthy. Oral bacteria can lead to many other issues and keeping those bacteria levels down can add years on to your pet's life. Just as your dental health is an important part of your life, your pet's dental health is an important part of their overall health as well.
